Review by Lare on Jan 11 2005

I know it was a while ago, but since this was my first gig after being a fan for 13 years, I'll propably never forget it. Can't remember the exact setlist anymore, but I'll do my best otherwise. First of all I was totally flabbergasted to find out that the Bone was about to visit Finland, since I had very much been assured that they didn't exist anymore. So, as I had mourned the loss of my love c...

Review from the Nuttwork's archive

I've been quite silent on this list for several years already, but last Saturday night / Sunday morning was too good not to mention. First, I saw a Bone show (Helsinki) for the first time. Before the show, I happened to spot Angelo coming out of a cab so I walked up to greet him, and to tell I'd been waiting for them to come over for 13 years now. Well, did they make it up for the wait...

The opening act (Deep Turtle) finished around 23:15 and there was some reggae on the PA while my friends & I walked up to the fence separating us from the stage (about one meter gap). Then around midnight the music changed to something else. Suddenly I felt someone pushing me on the shoulder and when I turned to look, Mr. Moore was busy climbing over us to the stage in his prisoner suit. He proceeded to play on the Theremin and recite "Fishbone soldier". I didn't recognize the first song, I later learned from the set list that it was "Nuttmeg World". From there it was:

Party At Ground Zero Karma Tsunami Skankin' To The Beat Riot Premadawnutt (not heard before) Freddie's Dead Are You Wid It Cholly Where'd You Get Those Pants Alcoholic Chim Chim's Badass Revenge Bonin' In The Boneyard Sunless Saturday

The first encore was Demon (never heard) Deep Inside

On the list they had also put "Aids And Armageddon" but this was not played.

The second encore was "Fishbone is Red Hot", again omitting the "Lyin' Ass Bitch" that was on the list.

The crowd was not that big, but I was pleasantly surprised to see so many people who at least knew quite many songs. Some seemed to be not so up to date, at least I heard somebody saying they want to see "that fat keyboard player" dive and dance with the keyboard.

The gig was great, maybe the guitar and Walt's vocals could have been a bit clearer though. Also the Theremin was not working very reliably. Norwood is really one of my heros, I always enjoy his playing. Walt is cool, but he did seem to be too concerned over the lack of weed he was suffering (mentioned about three times). The guys seemed to be pleased with the crowd reaction although I think the poems were lost by many a Finn although Angelo does pronounce words very clearly (I couldn't make out everything although I speak English at home and at work).

The best parts were maybe Skankin', Cholly and Bonin'. I had really hoped to hear Question Of Life after someone mentioned it getting played but the set was good and tight nonetheless. Not a dull moment, although a couple of times during Alcoholic and Premadawnutt I was mostly concentrating on trying not to be squeezed to death against the fence and waiting for some mellower grooves to save my butt.

Angelo surfed maybe four times, once diving over the gap and once climbing to the balcony and diving from there (not very high). The bouncers were really frustrated by this, obviously they did nothing to stop him but all the audience surfers were handled pretty roughly.

After the show was over, I drove home to find my wife awake at 2 AM. Her contractions had started 40 minutes earlier. We drove to the hospital, got admitted, entered the labor room at 4 and our second daughter, 55cm and 3970g, was born at 8:11 on Fathers Day morning. I think it goes without saying the day will be remembered quite fondly...
