Review from the Nuttwork's archive

I'm finally getting around to posting a review of the Fishbone show on Friday in Burnaby (a suburb of Vancouver). I always get worried when I see that Fishbone is playing at this particular club because it's where a lot of bands from the 80's play, bands like LA Guns and Quiet Riot.

The first band that opened fit into the genre expected at this venue...an 80's style band that was not very tight at all. The only entertaining part was when the singer started going into his upper range and watching Angelo crack the biggest grin. :D

Next up was Grimskunk. All I can say about these guys is they kick ass!!! They're probably the first opening band that I've seen that really complements Fishbone's diverse style...Angelo watched their set from the DJ booth as I was wishing he would grab his sax and go and jam with them. Anyways, Grimskunk apparently is going to head over to Europe after touring across Canada so all you luck Euro soldiers, check 'em out!

Finally, Fishbone hit the stage and I have to admit that they put on a much better show then the night before. Not that the show was bad the night before but Angelo and Walt just had a lot more energy on stage. There was no crowd surfing but it was a big stage so Angelo had lots of room to go crazy (the cartwheels were pretty cool!). Song songs they played that I can remember:

Last Dayz (poem) X-cuez Me Nuttmeg World Shakey Ground Ugly I Wish I Had A Date Cholly Pressure Riot Karma Tsunami Are You Wid It Premadawnutt Sunless Saturday Aids & Armagedon

Encore: Demon In Here

I probably missed a few. I couldn't really decide which song stood out as a highlight because they were all so damn tight and, as always, it's always so amazing to watch the bands switch styles flawlessly (ie. Date to Pressure to Cholly).

I bought Weapon of Choice's CD, Illoominutty, at the show and it's pretty funky. I saw these guys open for Primus and RHCP back in 97 ish and I thought they sucked but maybe it was the large venue/crappy sound. Does anyone know if there are any plans for WOC to do any touring???

cheers, Mike.
