Review by Angelboy on May 22 2014

Band were tight as usual but the sound was really top heavy, so much so that the drums were often drowned out. Not the bands fault - they were excellent. I saw Angelo before this gig in the bar and gave him a nod and he gave me one back. Must have thought I was a bit weird! Shame they didn't play an encore - something was up, not sure if Norwood had the hump as Angelo said that if we wanted more w...

I think the lack of an encore was more to do with the venue's strict 11pm curfew. That's what I thought anyway. A lot of watch pointing between sound guys and management. Gutted really as i've ALWAYS wanted to hear The Goose and Another Generation, but oh well.

I gotta say they were on form! The whole set felt more together than the last couple of shows I saw a few years...

The first time I saw Fishbone was at the Academy supported by ProPain, The Goats and Bad Brains on 14th October 1993 (that gig isn't listed on this site BTW but I still have my ticket stub to prove it!) so I was made up that they were returning to this venue.  I was impressed by Clay Pigeon who had a good sound and some pretty decent songs, shame about the lack of people actually watching them but I suppose that's the way it goes for support acts.

This is the first time that I have seen this line-up live and I feel that they have a settled group.   It's great to see Walt back doing his thing and the rest of the band looked like they were enjoying it.  They were really tight and  John Steward's drumming has got a lot more powerful and inventive since he joined the band.  The crowd interaction was great too and both Jay and Angelo's crowd surfing was great to see, although I did get Jay's boot in my face at the end during Sunless Saturday which meant I lost my glasses (found them at the end when the house lights went up, all bent, but wearable for the drive home thankfully!).

On the whole, a good gig, a good mix of old and new tunes - the standouts being Party At Ground Zero, Everyday Sunshine, Bustin' Suds, Alcoholic, Bonin' in the Boneyard and Sunless Saturday.  I thought the sound was OK although I had problems hearing some of Angelo's sax parts but it didn't detract from what was a memorable evening.  Can't wait for the next Fishbone  Manchester visit.  I have some pics and vids but I'm having trouble posting them.  I will keep trying!

Review by Mr H on May 23 2014

It's been years since I last saw a Fishbone show, and I only found out about this one three nights earlier - lots of anticipation on the drive to Manchester. I ordered the tickets online the night before, and was surprised when I collected them to see what low numbers I had - 86 and 87. The world has gone mad when a band like Fishbone is playing small venues to less-than-packed audiences, but w...
