Well, well, well.Fishbone at last in Frankfurt, where this Washington DC expat is callin' home for the next several years.
To say I was looking forward to this after watchin' the "Bone skip Germany mostly the last few years touring wise,is an understatement.
And boy did I almost miss it! Poorly and I mean POORLY promoted and in the most outta-the-way as in no one really goes there kinda club where no band of Fishbone's stature usually dares to venture.
Well I guess Norwoods slightly pissy 'tude was understandable given that oh a maximum of maybe 70,yes thats right SEVENTY people showed up to see Fishbone.bad for them but good for me,right up front all night it was almost like a private party performance it was that intimate.
And given the usual German reserve when it comes to live bands it was mostly up to little 'ol me to give the fellas the back and forth banter that the 'Bone likes to engage in live.So a few more beers and I was glad to have some repartee w/ the fellas.I know they enjoyed and man so did I!!!
It was Walts b-day so he was in good spirits(ahem, bought him an on stage shot and did cheers w/ him)Angelo came out high as a kite! The new midget trombonist was great.
But I did notice that Rocky like the last few times I've seen FB just doesn't really seem into it or even a vital part of the band, his guitar is always buried in the mix and they dont do much of the earlier guitar driven material anymore anyways.I switched over to his lonesome side of the stage and like the last few times I've seen them, his tone was pretty bad, muddy unfocused and just outta sorts,he never looks confident on stage w/ FB.Hate to say it but he should probably move on,He seems like a slightly lost man on an island live.
Dre looked bored but other than that they smoked, except for another noted bugaboo, this version of FB can't really flat out kick out the older heavier tunes,Steward seems to fall apart on the denser heavier tracks like Sunless Saturday. If I hadn't noticed this the last 4 times I've seen them over the years I wouldn't point it out but it is what it is and they have more than enough killer new material to play anyhow.
Junkies Prayer was the odd highlight for me,guess after living in the ghetto for awhile, that song just hits home though I gotta admit it was an odd choice for a German audience, that song is pretty obtuse if yer not familiar w/ the US inner city crack epidemic or as I used to say,you haven't lived till an older sister in yer hood offers to suck yer d**k for a pack of Newports LOL!!!
A little over 2 hours later I left over-joyed my spirits lifted and slightly saddened w/ the knowledge FB would be in Finland for Thanksgiving oh and more than a little buzzed.Plus I got to shoot the breeze w/ Walter about DC go-go and life in general after the show.
A prince of a guy I tell ya! Thanks to the "bone fer makin this expats night! And come back soon!!!!!!
