Review from the Nuttwork's archive

Alright here's another attempt, while it's still (sorta) fresh in mind, of another Fishbone live review. Well, when I entered Nighttown, which is a pretty large venue, I already feared the worst. I was audiance-member numer 4.....Luckily, the place filled up a bit while the support act (nice, but no more) was playing, but it wasn't even half-full when FB came up on stage. Angelo had been frollicking freely amongst the audiance in a harp suit and a flat top hat, sporting the cane. On stage he had changed into another suit, a white one, still sporting the cane and in fine form on his "Sqeeuwze me" part. "Nuttmeg world" came next and by then I realised that the vast majority of the 'crowd' knew absolutely not what to expect and I think I was the only one singing along "Just Allow" was played, and again I got the vast impression that I was the only one in the building that knew the song (s). Different than in Utrecht, when I saw them last they did not start with the 'well-known' songs, but with the 'newer shit'. (Temple Bar, Nuttworx,) After that, I just said fuk it and went up front to dance with the nice girls and the big bulky bald black guy (I first thought it was Rudeboy from UDS, maybe it even was) who was skankin'and smiling the whole time. I got a few funny looks from the two lesbian's next to me when I was jumping up and down yelling FAT CHICKS!! at the top of my lungs. And even more when they played CCBAR and went totally nuttz. By then at least half of the people in there were partying (especially on the older stuff, party, bonin'etc) They came back twice to play encores, but it was damn hard work to make them, when you're yelling your ass off to get the rest of the crowd to get into it. At last I got to hear them play Fishbone is red hot live... then it was already over. Oh yeah, Aids and Armageddon kicked ass...what a great live song. Too bad I already knew what to expect after the 'blues-intro by Spacey'. And then came the good part. I was standing at the bar near the backstage entrance, not entirely by coincidence, sortof hoping to catch one of the guys while drinking my last after show beer, when Angelo came out and stood right next to me, ordering a couple of drinks. Now, before he sported the cane for effect and show, but I really have to say, at that time he NEEDED it. I mean, he was limping noticibly. I couldn't let the moment pass, I never would have forgiven myself, so I just put out my hand and he shook it. Then I asked him: 'How's the knee?' He gave me a look like: how the fuck do you know there's something wrong with my knee?' but he was curtious enough to answer. He said 'Well, it's not doing too well at the moment.' After that I seemed to have lost all my abillity of the English language and started blabbering that I knew about his knee from the this newsgroup. I said we've been following them throughout the whole Euro-tour. Now he looked at me like I was from the freakin' FBI or something! He was really surprised 'Really ? what do you guys know?' I ensured him we only know he somehow put his knee out at a gig. I started blabbering at that point how great it was they came back after such a long time, but I could sense he wasn't really in the mood for talking so I backed off while he took his drinks and went backstage. I knew there wasn't big enough crowd for him to stage-dive, but now I realised why he didn't do any cartwheels on stage and stuff, although he was lively enough dancing and prancing his ass off. (more than Walt, who stands there with a dopey grin on his face and dances once in a while, but hey...that's ok too) All the band seem pretty happy on the whole, even when the place isn't packed. Although I noticed Wet Daddy arriving a tad late..walking on stage in his outdoor clothes and a backpack still on before the show! Any wayz that's my experience of the bone live, talked to a nice girl who was dancing near me while waiting for our tram home, she told me she never saw them before but would definetely buy some cd's now....another generation...
