Last night's show at the Cat's Cradle was great! The Veldt opened up and I hadn't heard them before but they were pretty good. Then Blowfly - if you've seen him, no description is necessary, if you haven't, no words would suffice. The raunchiest raps over cool grooves from the 'Bone minus Angelo. Very funny and funky stuff. Next Dr. Madd Vibe treated us to 'Secret Agent Dad', 'Bitches' and at lea...
I agree this show was off the hook! I hate I missed Servitude- I had to leave early into Shakey Ground 'cause my friend was ready to leave. He's not much into funky stuff, although his taste is pretty good IMO- Radiohead, King Crimson, Tool, J. Buckley, etc. Guess he's kind of a cracker. :D He did say that he clearly saw that they were great musicians but it wasn't his thing.
I didn't care much for Blowfly. It was ok party-funk with some funny/nasty lyrics but nothing captivating at all. Of course, I didn't expect much more from a novelty act so I wasn't let down. (Albeit the novelty act with probably the longest-running career!) I do like the DW stuff better- funkier, and Walt's underrated voice and unique phrasing add lots of character to some old-school funk that was intense but a little too retro-70's for me. I bought the album when it came out and thought the same then, so again, I wasn't let down. Good stuff but nothing I'd break my neck to go see if it wasn't an incarnation of Fishbone- 'cause we all know what those cats are capable of!
I didn't get a set list either but Trip has it pretty much down, I think. They played Suffering, which I think could stand to be sped back up at least to the original tempo. IMO, it drags a bit slowed down, as opposed to Shakey Ground, which just gets nastier and funkier when they slow it down! Overall this show was much more energetic and inspired than when I saw them in June (?), last time they were in NC. Still, the baddest band in the land. I can't WAIT for the new material to be released!!! The crowd seemed to dig the new stuff as much as the old, and there were lots of ppl singing along to all the classic stuff so there were some die-hard fans there. Decent pit going, which Angelo dived into once during "Deep Inside".
It was great meeting Kiesha & Trip, and seeing Kent again. Next time hopefully we can arrange a get-together farther ahead of time. -Tim.
