Review from the Nuttwork's archive

Warning: The following may ramble a bit. Both the Spartanburg and Hilton Head shows were excellent as always. I don't have setlists but they was similar to earlier shows this tour. Friday night (Spartanburg) Dirty Walt opened up with Rolling in a Many Blunt Ways and Nuttmegg World and Saturday night (Hilton Head) it was Don't Call that Man a Pussy and Nuttmegg World. Damn that shit was funky! Angelo was helping out on percussion and background vocals (I had been wondering if he would come out later after Walt's songs). They played Skankin' to the Beat and then the unreleased songs (in no particular order): Primadawnutt, Skank and Go Nutts, Frayed Fuckin' Nerve Endings, In the Heat of Anger. It was great to hear them play all these songs back-to-back, so much new funk for my hungry ears. The only other difference I remember is Friday night they played Freddie's Dead and Saturday was Where'd Your Get Those Pants instead. Friday night I was lucky enough to be standing right in front of Norwood and watching him play is phenomenal, especially on Bonin' in the Boneyard. Saturday I was directly in front of Spacey T for Servitude and it was incredible to see him play. John Steward really tore up the place on Skankin' and Alcoholic. Along with dedicating Shakey Ground to Eddie Hazel, Spacey also mentioned John Lee Hooker. AKP joined the band onstage for part of Shakey Ground. As far as their performance, I didn't think they were as bad as I had heard about on here. It's certainly not my favorite kind of music, but to me they were no worse than Korn or Limp Bizkit (but then again I don't like either of those bands). The members of AKP were very nice though. I talked to a couple of them after the show and they were very helpful Saturday when I ran into them as I was looking for the club. Angelo and the guys seemed to enjoy having them on the tour and sharing the stage with them. They don't seem to want for promotional materials, they had both clubs plastered with posters and stickers. You would have thought they were the headliners. The Blue Nite Café in Hilton Head seemed to have a much better sound than the Magnolia Street Pub. Thanks to a recently sprained ankle, I wasn't able to stand up front for the whole show Saturday night (it was a little sore from doing just that Friday night) but sitting back I was able to hear the band much better and they sounded great. Both shows had a pretty good turnout considering the clubs were kinda small. I talked to both Angelo and John and they both were happy to be out on the road playing live. John said Saturday he and some of the other guys went para-sailing and he enjoyed that a lot. While I was talking to Angelo, he was DJing and I noticed a copy of our list?s compilation in his CD case. I still need to get me one of those. Both nights Fishbone didn't take the stage until 12:30 and played until 3:00. Friday night Angelo stayed for the enthusiastic crowd to recite Secret Agent Dad and Nate Procrasto. Saturday night he was starting Nate Procrasto but the bouncers were literally pushing us toward the door complaining that it was 3:00am so I don't know if Angelo got to finish or not (for those who haven't heard it, Nate Procrasto is about 7 minutes long). Angelo noticed everyone getting shoved and said it was obvious that the bouncers didn't care what he was up there doing so he was gonna finish his poetry. BTW, my car was broken into Friday night back at the hotel. Actually 'broken into' is and exaggeration - I have a Tracker so they just unzipped the side window. They only got a handful of change and the power and cassette adapters for my CD player. I had all my valuables in the hotel. More annoying than anything else. Just thought it was weird since Debbie's car was broken into recently too. I'll be going to the show this Wednesday at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem too. Can't wait. Sorry I rambled so much.
