Fast facts! List members I saw at the show: Lauren Batiste, Sarah Fisher (looking GREAT and dancing like a madwoman), Weston Thompson, Bill Mentlow, and ex-list member (and possible returnee) Corey, the Kung-Fu Monkey Robot. The openers: A shortened set from Weapon of Choice. Opened with SPADE. Ended with HIGHPERSPICE. Two solos from Fish on his "little" kit. Keefus was not onstage (no keys), but the impact was only lessened for those who know what they were missing. Pre-show: Angelo DJ'ed and played a lot of "angry" music. Eminem, Ministry and the like. Interspersed were what sounded like new Fishbone tracks. Jeret (InsectEater artist and webmaster) thought he recognized Nate Procrasto as one of the tunes. Set Length: Apx. 2 hours The Look: Angelo in a black tux with tails and a black shirt and bowler hat. Walt, looking like a satisfied tomcat in a referee's jersey. Norwood had the unicorn dread doubled back over itself like an Eye of Horus. McKnight with a mohawk (shades of '88) and a Hawiian shirt, with his trombone how neatly stashed atop his keyboard. Steward behind the kit in focused soldier mode. Spacey in an Eddie Hazel long-sleeved t (try and find one of those) and no shades. The Vibe: FUN! Everyone was screwing around and the pit was mostly light-hearted. No kung-fu madness this time. Norwood was a little inebriated and moving more onstage than in recent shows I've seen. The band seemed relaxed and was laughing the two times that songs were called to a halt to restart them properly Wild Flyer Announcement: The headliner at Coacella (a desert music festival) is listed at JANE'S ADDICTION. Holy shit! The Set (hee-hee, I took notes): Unyielding Conditioning - Everyday Sunshine - Karma Tsunami (restarted) - Just Allow - Subliminal Facism - Bonin' in the Boneyard - Aids & Armageddon - Cholly - Ma & Pa - Give It Up - Monkey Dick - Junkie's Prayer - Freddie's Dead - Shakey Ground - The Suffering - Where'd You Get Those Pants - Alcoholic - Party At Ground Zero - Extended Spacey T Solo - Jah Jah On The Telephone (short version) - Deep Inside The Details: So, like I said, Norwood was ordering "double shots of 1800" from the stage. Walt was swigging water, in fine voice and mixed up front, just where I like him. I wanna hear the Sanitations live! Wood's bass was only audible on the high end for awhile, but was fixed as the set progressed. Still sounded very sub-bassy. Angelo's theremin was mixed way too low. Spacey sounded great, as did McKnight on all instruments. His facility to switch mid-song is amazing. Angelo said that "Since George Bush is in office, we are renaming this song 'Facisim'...just 'Facism'," to intro Subliminal Facism. Norwood spoke about the recent passing (Feb 14) of the founder of the West Coast chapter of the BRC as his intro to AIDS and Armageddon. He also spoke from the heart about Keith Morris of the Circle Jerks, who was in the audience. I looked for him, but couldn't find him. Walt intro'd Cholly by speaking to the large women in a forthright manner. He also had some funny shit to say prior to Ma & Pa about Norwood screwing around. God, this show was funny as hell now that I get into this review. Junkie's Prayer was just McKnight and Angelo, really spooky cool. Steward even got on the mic to ask the light man to stop cooking him with the overhead spot. Durga joined the men for the first time in awhile for Shakey Ground, Suffering and Pants. Really cute women onstage for Pants, including some pro snowboarders Angelo had met recently. Corey dove off the stage (into a thin-ass pit) during Party. Spacey's extended solo was utterly amazing and allowed the band to clean up offstage. At one point (I don't remember which song), the band had to vamp along as Angelo had run offstage and hadn't returned. When he did come back, he explained he had to take an emergency shit due to too much Tabasco at lunch. Angelo came onstage to do a short version of Jah Jah and they ripped the lid off with Deep Inside. The Upshot: The shows are better than ever. I can't wait to hear the new stuff performed. I know many of you drive a long way to see a show. Not like it isn't always worth it, but travel with joy in your hearts. The show you want awaits.
